CHARACTER
Name: Katniss Everdeen
Canon: The Hunger Games
Age: 16
Demigod/Hunter/Satyr/Nymph: Daughter of Apollo
Demigod abilities: Vitakinesis (via singing a tribute song to Apollo), great archery skills

Personality: Katniss is, at her core, an exceedingly stubborn individual who gets tunnel-vision where her sister is concerned. She has always been more concerned with taking care of Prim than things like good grades, friends, or extra-curricular activities. This means that she comes off as brash, rude, and abrasive when speaking to people that she doesn't know. She and her sister were moved around with their foster home so often that making connections with people, she quickly realized, meant leaving them behind. She tried to stay distant with as many people as possible, although that was difficult (especially with Finnick, and a few others that she won't talk about unless she's pressed).

Despite her best attempts, she does not do well with blood and other body fluids -- she's squeamish, and will swallow that only for people that she cares deeply about. Because she was always the 'unpopular' girl at her school, she most often assumes that people are trying to get something from her when they're nice to her, and it takes her a lot of time to warm up to anyone. Once she does, though, she'll make a worthy ally. She's incredibly loyal once someone proves to her that they mean well, and she will go to great lengths to protect them. Despite her being somewhat distant, she's a very caring person -- she wants to protect those that are weaker than her, like her sister and her mother. She went out of her way at school to protect other kids who were picked on, not earning her any points with the popular kids.

She tries to act logically, but she's easily clouded by her emotions. She's prone to becoming angry and lashing out, saying things and doing things that get her in trouble later. Unfortunately, her stubbornness means that it's hard for her to apologize and when she does, it comes out clumsy and embarrassing for both parties. She distracts herself with the bow and arrow that her father gave her, and this is part of the reason she's so skilled with it -- she's spent a lot of time keeping herself distracted, and hunting was at one point the only real way to feed her sister. Squirrel isn't so bad when it's stewed, honest.

AU History: Katniss Everdeen was born to a loving father and a mother who was, at least, making an attempt to be attentive. Just after her sister was born, Katniss's father was killed in what was a called a 'freak accident' -- the mine that he was working suffered a catastrophic cave-in and he was killed, although his body was never recovered. The death of Katniss's father completely destroyed her mother, and the woman shut down -- she lost her job, and Katniss was forced to try and scrape together a living by working long night-shift hours as a dishwasher. Her grades suffered, and eventually a concerned teacher spoke to child welfare. Katniss and her sister were taken away from her mother (something that Katniss was ashamed to admit was a relief to her) and transferred to a foster home. The home itself wasn't anything terrible, but she did not fit in well with the other children at her school in California. The only person who seemed to take an incorrigible interest in her was Finnick Odair, and she was certain the reason he was always badgering her was because she bristled under his attentions.

Still, he'd always made more of an effort than most to be kind to her -- and when his father was killed, she'd been one of the few people to listen to his crazy stories about monsters. She'd always suspected her father's death had been less-than-accidental, and she'd grown paranoid enough in her foster home to entertain the idea that there was something more going on. Finnick disappeared shortly after his father's death, but she remembered his claims.

Six months later, the attacks started. Small things running at her in the night, things she could get away from using the bow-and-arrow her father had left her -- but nothing she couldn't handle, at least at first. She'd assumed the first few times that they were just especially persistent street dogs, at least until the room that she shared with Prim was broken into by a clawed creature that fractured her sister's arm in several places; she sang to her sister, unknowingly healing her. The creature was too monstrous to be anything but the creatures she'd feared, the ones that attacked Finnick. She packed her bags as soon as Prim returned home from the hospital and left the foster home in search of Camp Half-Blood. It took her several weeks of research to figure out where he had disappeared to, and several more to actually find it ... but somehow, it wasn't as hard as she was expecting. In fact, they welcomed her as a daughter of Apollo -- and all the pieces fell into place. The reason her mother had been so upset when her father had died, the one man who would still marry her after finding out about who was really the father of their first child ... everything clicked.

That doesn't mean she's happy about it, though.

Iris Message: [Katniss shifts uncomfortably and rubs her arm, looking into the rainbow she's made in what appears to be the side of a tree in the wood not too far from camp. She doesn't want to be making this post, but it's better than asking people for things face-to-face.]

Look, I'm only here to protect my sister from the things chasing after me. The problem is, I -- can't get in touch with her, which kind of defeats the purpose of me trying to make sure she's okay.

[She frowns to herself. Asking outright seems like something silly, like trying to trade something for nothing -- and since everything has a price, she feels the need to offer something.]

I'm good with a bow, if people want some extra food.

[She pauses, glancing over her shoulder back toward the camp.]

Or -- if anyone wants training with a bow, I could help with that too. What I need is something to get ahold of Prim that isn't just going to get confiscated or fail to work properly. And it needs to be reliable, so don't bother offering something that's going to bust after a use or two.

[Someone once told her that she was about as charming as a slug. That's -- not entirely inaccurate, and it might become a more popular sentiment around camp soon enough. She seems to realize she's being a rude asshole but doesn't know exactly how to fix it, so she just lets her shoulders sag a little and looks back into the rainbow.]

...please. It's important, okay? That I know Prim's safe, and that I can keep an eye on her.
